FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to add anything to the concrete if we want to get it polished?

No nothing needs to be added to standard concrete so it can be polished unless you want a different colour. Best to call into our showroom to see the options.

Can we pull up our existing flooring and polish the concrete underneath?

Yes you can 9 times out of 10. However, you are limited to a Light or Medium Exposure Finish and we would need to double check first.

Are polished concrete floors cold to walk on?

Concrete is a thermal conductor which means it can absorb and store heat. If you have a well-insulated home that see a good amount of sunlight during the day, the concrete will absorb the heat during the day and release it at night. We have had customers tell us they have underfloor heating, but they don’t use it or if they do it’s for an hour a day.

What maintenance is required for a polished concrete floor?

Daily/Weekly – Sweep/vacuum the floor with soft brushes to remove loose dirt. Use Grinding Floor Cleaner to correct volume of water with a microfibre mop only slightly damp.

Annually or up to 3-4 yearly – Contact us to organise a maintenance check and a rebuff.

Does Polished Concrete stain?

Polished concrete can stain like most other flooring types. This usually only occurs when an accidental spill has been left to sit on the concrete surface for an extended period of time. With regular simple maintenance this can be avoided in most cases. If you do find this happens to your floor, most of the time it can be repaired.

Is Polished Concrete slippery?

No, even when it has a shiny surface. Polished concrete actually provides a good level of slip resistance and can be better than some other flooring choices. As with any flooring material you do need to take care when it is wet.

What happens with the control cuts when you polish our floor?

By default we fill these cuts with rigid grout and will try to match the colour as best we can. They then get sealed with the rest of the floor. There are other options to fill the cuts with such as rubber or polyurea.

If you are interested in these we can quote this as an additional cost.

What mpa concrete is best if I want polished concrete in my new home?

25mpa is ideal for polished concrete.

Can you improve existing outdoor concrete?

Yes we can. We have several solutions we can offer to rejuvenate exterior concrete. Some of these solutions are bush hammering, acid washing, coatings, etc. Once we have had a look we will recommend what we think is the best option.
